Graduate Certificate in
Distance Education: Online Teaching and Learning

Course RequirementsProgram DeliveryAdmission

The Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University offers a 15-semester-hour certificate program in Distance Education: Online Teaching and Learning.  The certificate program is designed to meet the interest and needs of community college faculty/staff, K-12 teachers, media specialists, trainers, and individuals seeking to design and develop online educational and training materials.

The graduate certificate program provides students with a wide range of learning experiences including webpage development, creating virtual learning communities, instructional design, multimedia production, and online teaching.

Students work with the program advisor for the certificate program in developing an approved course of study.  Generally, one course is taken per semester so that a student can complete their program of study within five terms (including one summer term).

Program Delivery:

The courses required for the Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning are delivered via the Internet. Students must have access to the Internet and basic computer skills. Generally, one course will be made available each semester, and the program is five terms (1 1/2 years) in length. The courses in each cohort will be offered only once, so a student must be prepared to take the courses as they are made available.

Requirements for Admission:

Prospective students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Information regarding making application to this program are available at: http://www.graduate.appstate.edu/gradstudies/prospective/certificate.html. (Prior to making application to this certificate program, it is recommended that an individual contact the Office of Extension and Distance Education at Appalachian by calling 800/355-4084 or by submitting the electronic request form at: http://www.ext-dl.appstate.edu/infoform.html.)

Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Distance Education:  Online Teaching and Learning program constitutes neither acceptance to the Cratis D. Williams Graduate School nor entry to the master’s degree program in Educational Media. It is possible, however, for certificate courses to count toward the master’s degree; but, students must consult with the program advisor prior to the completion of the first two certificate courses.
