A. "Add on" certification in Reading Education:
The 18 semester hour "Add on" certification program is designed for classroom and Title I teachers who hold a current NC "A" teaching license and are seeking K-12 reading certification.
The 18 semester hours can be applied toward a Master of
Arts degree in Reading Education if the student enters
the graduate program before the end of 9 semester hours. In order to be considered for admission to this program, an individual must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and hold a NC "A" teaching license or equivalent from another state. Applications must be submitted in accordance with ASU and College of Education policies: http://www.ced.appstate.edu/departments/lre/AdmissionProcedures.aspx. In addition to the application form, applicants must present a letter of intent, resume, and a copy of active teaching license. The letter of intent should include the applicant's teaching goals, the teaching position held (if applicable), and the reason for applying to the Reading Education Program. Contact Dr.

C. Master of Arts degree in Reading Education

The MA degree program delivered off campus provides the Classroom/Clinical
concentration, which is intended for classroom teachers and reading specialists.
Students with this concentration are prepared to teach all aspects of reading
and language arts to K-12 students. Upon completion graduates are eligible
for advanced teaching licensure.
Requirements for this degree were designed,
and have been approved by the appropriate bodies at the
state level, to meet the advanced competencies as mandated
in the NC Excellent Schools Act for Master-level teacher
education programs.
Through the Office of Extension and Distance
Education, the Reich College of Education provides this
degree program at selected off-campus settings throughout

Requirements for Admission:
In order to be considered for admission to this program,
an individual must possess a bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university and hold a NC "A" teaching license or equivalent

or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores, three recommendations, a letter of intent, a resume' and copy of active teaching license. The letter of intent should include the applicant's teaching goals, the teaching position/s held (if applicable), and the reason for applying to the reading education program.
(Note on test scores: GPA of 3.0 or higher cumulative or in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work and official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores from Educational Testing Services or official Millers Analyogy Test (MAT) scores from Harcourt Assessment, with scores of 390 or higher on the MAT, or at least 2 of the following minimum GRE scores: GREV=400, GREQ=400, GREW=3.5 OR: GPA below 3.0 but above 2.69 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work and official MAT scores of 400 or higher, or at least 2 of the following minimum GRE scores: GREV=400, GREQ=400, GREW=3.5)

Off-Campus Program Delivery:
The courses required for the MA degree in Reading Education
will be delivered to the designated off-campus site. Appalachian
State University faculty will teach each course; and, a
combination of instructional strategies and course delivery
systems may be employed. The modes of delivery may include:
the instructor's being present at the site; web-based instruction;
and/or live interactive two-way, audio-video sessions via
the North Carolina Information Highway (NCIH) network.
Generally, two courses will be provided each term. Face-to-face
courses will be conducted either during the evenings (e.g.,
5:00-7:45 pm one evening a week for 15 weeks) or on weekends
(e.g, Friday evenings and Saturday mornings).
