Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise,
Homes Convocation Center, Appalachian State University
The Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise is gauging interest in a degree-completion program, leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion. It is intended for those seeking to prepare for responsibility and leadership in health and wellness programs.
The goal of health promotion is to improve the health of individuals and communities through appropriate planning, implementation, and evaluation of health-promotion and disease-prevention programs. Graduates will be prepared to (1) positively impact the health and well-being of entire populations and (2) design intervention programs using a combination of health promotion and related organizational, economic, legislative, and environmental support mechanisms.
ASU will deliver upper-division coursework online to a cohort of 20 students - primarily those who have completed, or are close to completing, required coursework through a college transfer program (or equivalent lower-division coursework). During ten semesters (approx 3.5 academic years), university faculty will deliver approximately 62 semester hours of program courses in areas such as nutrition, physical fitness, substance abuse, disease prevention, environmental health, health risk appraisal, and health behavior. A business minor is included in the online program, and an internship is required. The curriculum is also designed for students who will continue into graduate education.
