Off-Campus Degree-Completion Program in Business Management
The mission of the John A. Walker College of Business is
to meet the challenges of the future by educating its students,
supporting intellectual contributions by faculty and assisting
businesses and other organizations. Its primary purpose is
to prepare individuals for leadership responsibilities in a
technologically-oriented, diverse, dynamic and global environment
by providing high-quality instruction leading to the Bachelor
of Business Administration (BSBA) undergraduate degree. The Walker College of
Business is accredited by the International Association for
Management Education (AACSB).
Through the Office of Extension and Distance Education the
Walker College of Business will present an off-campus
undergraduate program in business management which will provide
the upper-division (junior and senior years) course work for
the BSBA degre at a community college site in northwestern
NC. Lower-division
courses for the program are acquired at community colleges (or other accredited post-secondary institutions).

Completion of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) Core within the North Carolina Community College System prior to enrollment at Appalachian will enable a student to meet Appalachian's general education requirements automatically. (Anyone who will not meet the CAA core prior to enrollment at Appalachian will need to meet Appalachian's general education requirements.) Other
community college courses may be needed to complete certain
lower-division requirements in the program of study. The following lower-division courses are required for the major and must be accomplished outside the program which Appalachian will deliver. (The Appalachian course number is listed in the first column, with the community college equivalent core shown in the second column.)

| A total of 122 sh is required to graduate; therefore, depending upon the student's academic background, there may be the need to present additional elective credit hours to fulfill graduation requirements. (Information regarding the possible need for elective credits will be presented at the time of the transcript evaluation.) |
Concurrent enrollment (i.e. taking courses through Appalachian and the community college during the same term) is allowed, but students are advised to enroll in no more than 15-16 total semester hours per academic semester and no more than 12 semester hours in summer term. Students must plan carefully in order to accomplish any pre-requisite courses within the appropriate time frame.
Students
must earn a 2.5 cumulative gpa on initial Appalachian coursework as well as have completed the lower-division business core requirements in order to be officially admitted
to the Walker College of Business.
All upper-division courses necessary to earn the BSBA in Business Administration, Management, degree are delivered to the off-campus site.
Entry opportunities for new students in Appalachian’s off-campus full-time, daytime BSBA degree in Business Administration, Management program are proposed each fall (beginning Fall 2008) at the designated off-campus site. Appalachian faculty teach the off-campus courses and the mode of delivery may include face-to-face classes, two-way audio-video classes, and online course work. Because the program is classified as full-time, there are generally four courses (averaging 12 semester hours) offered each term primarily during the weekday daytime hours. The duration of the Appalachian upper-division course sequence is two years.
Application Process
The application for admission for each off-campus program is made available only at selected times. Please contact the Office of Extension and Distance Education for more details (call 800/355-4084 or submit the electronic request form). At this time, the application for admission should not be submitted via Appalachian's online form.
Part I: Admission to the University
Individuals seeking to enter an off-campus undergraduate program must present at least 57 semester hours of transferable work (applicable to this program) prior to entry. Transfer students are accepted based upon successful completion of college transferable credits. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (as calculated by Appalachian) on all transferable coursework taken within the two previous years is required to be admitted. All grades earned in transferable courses within the last two years, including repeated courses, are used in calculating the grade point average. (College course work taken in excess of two years ago will be considered for transfer, but the grades in this coursework are not used in determining the cumulative GPA for admission purposes.) Students less than 24 years of age who have not completed the high school Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) must present one of the following:
- NC Community College CAA core
- AA or AS degree
- 6 semester hours of transferable courses in each of the following areas: English, mathematics, social science, and science (Additionally, individuals graduating from high school in 2004 or later must present an additional 6 semester hours in a foreign language.)
Part II: Admission to the Walker College of Business
By the end of the first year of the off-campus program, students must be admitted to the Walker College of Business. Acceptance requires at least 60 semester hours of coursework with a 2.5 cumulative GPA on courses taken through Appalachian (with no incomplete grades). Students must have fulfilled the requirements for English composition and Math as cited in the chart above and the lower-division business core (i.e.; ACC 120/121, ECO 251/252, MAT 151 or 155, and BUS 115) with a cumulative average of at least 2.0 on these courses. Additionally, students must present passing marks on the Business Basic Writing Skills Proficiency Test and the Business Basic Computer Skills Proficiency Test.

Fall 2008 -- Full-time, daytime program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Managment degree is proposed to begin at the Hickory Metro Higher Education Center.
