Application Process
Because Appalachian’s off-campus programs
are cohort based, there are windows of opportunity to enter;
therefore, applications (and enrollment) for each cohort
are taken only during certain periods of time. Typically,
the Office of Extension and Distance Education conducts
an information session for each new cohort at the site of
the proposed cohort four months to a year before the cohort
is set to begin. It is during this information session that
applications are circulated and the application deadline
is announced. If one is unable to attend the information
session, application packets can be mailed or an application
for admission form may be downloaded. (The application forms
for the undergraduate off-campus programs should not be submitted online; rather,
they should be mailed to the Office of Extension and Distance
Education.)
Undergraduate Application Process
Applications for off-campus programs are available from the
Office of Extension and Distance Education (800/355-4084).
An applicant must submit the completed application form along
with the $45 application fee to the:
Office of Extension and Distance Education
ASU PO Box 32054
Boone, NC 28608
Additionally, official transcripts from high school and each
college or university attended must be submitted directly from
the awarding institution to the Office of Extension and Distance
Education. Once the application form and all supporting transcripts
are received the Office of Admissions reviews the application
for admission, and the applicant is usually notified within
a month.
Transfer students are admitted based primarily upon successful
completion of college transferable credits. A cumulative gpa
of at least 2.0—calculated on all attempts of transferable
courses within the three years preceding enrollment in the
off-campus program--must be presented. Off-campus program applicants
should have at least 30 semester hours of transfer credit prior
to beginning an off-campus program. Applicants who will be
less than 24 years of age upon beginning the off-campus program
must also meet the UNC Minimum Course Requirements.
Minimum Course Requirements, as mandated by the UNC System
for students less than 24 years of age, are: A high school
diploma or its equivalent; four English courses; three mathematics
courses, including Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, or a higher
level mathematics course for which Algebra II is a prerequisite;
three science courses, including at least one in a life or
biological science (biology); at least one course in a physical
science (physical science, chemistry, physics) and at least
one laboratory course; two courses in social studies including
one in US History. For high school graduates of 2004 and beyond,
two units of a second language will be required for admission. For
high school graduates of 2006, an additional unit of mathematics
(for a total of four) will be required for entrance to Appalachian.
